10 must-see streets in China

Those seeking to savor Chinese history and culture quickly now have a new traveling recipe, with China listing, for the first time, 10 must-see streets picked through public voting and a panel review by culture experts.
    Each of the 10 streets, including Guozijian Street in Beijing, South Avenue in Pingyao of Shanxi province, Central Avenue in Harbin and Barkhor Street in Lhasa, encapsulates a unique facet of China's traditional culture.

    Guozijian Street, for example, is the only street in Beijing featuring ancient archways. Home to the Imperial College during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, it has also witnessed Chinese intellectual development over the past 1,000 years.
    South Street in Pingyao city lies at the heart of the exceptionally well-preserved traditional Han Chinese city, founded in the 14th century, and is a window to the city's 700 years of history.

    The Central Avenue in Harbin, despite its relatively young history dating back to the late 1900s, stands out from the rest for its eclectic mix of various European architectures that have survived for more than a century.

    The 10 streets in the list were chosen from among more than 200 across the country.
    The selection, jointly launched by the Chinese Ministry of Culture and the State Administration of Cultural Relics, is aimed at raising public awareness of the importance of preserving and promoting the cultural and historic value of ancient streets, says Ouyang Jian of the Chinese Ministry of Culture.
    "Each of them has seen the history and development of the city they were built in," says Ouyang

    Other streets included in the list are Pingjiang Road in Suzhou, Jiangsu province; Tunxi Old Street in Huangshan, Anhui province; Three Lanes and Seven Valleys in Fuzhou, Fujian province; Qilou Old Street in Hainan's Haikou and two other streets in Shandong province - Badaguan in Qingdao and Zhaode Street in Qingzhou.

The first day in a lunar year is picked as the spring festival(simplfied Chinese:春节)As the oldest history recorded, it’s been 4000 years from the first time Chinese celebrated this most important festival.
There are quite a few stories about the origin of spring festival,among them,majority Chinese people believe the festival stems from YuShun(simplified Chinese: 虞舜).One day in 2000 years ago,Shun () became the emperor of China,he lead his officials worshipped the gods.From then on,people took that day as the first day of the year,this is how spring festival comes.

A Moonlit Night on the Spring River

新建网页 2

Today,we'd like to bring you a very picturesque poem and a
song both describe a moonlit night on the spring river.

Let's play the music player by Pipa and go slowly into the
wonderful night:

A moonlit night on the spring river
In spring the river rises as high as the sea,
and with the river's rise the moon uprises bright.
she follows the rolling waves for ten thousand li,
and where the river flows, there overflows her light.
the river winds around the fragrant islet where
the blooming flowers in her light all look like snow.
you cannot tell her beams from hoar frost in the air,
nor from white sand upon farewell beach below.
no dust has stained the water blending with the skies;
a lonely wheel like moon shines brilliant far and wide.
who by the riverside first saw the moon arise?
when did the moon first see a man by riverside?
ah, generations have come and pasted away;
from year to year the moons look alike, old and new.
we do not know tonight for whom she sheds her ray,
but hear the river say to its water adieu.
away, away is sailing a single cloud white;
on farewell beach pine
away maples green.
where is the wanderer sailing his boat tonight?
who, pining away, on the moonlit rails would learn?
alas! the moon is lingering over the tower;
it should have seen the dressing table of the fair.
she rolls the curtain up and light comes in her bower;
she washes but can't wash away the moonbeams there.
she sees the moon, but her beloved is out of sight;
she'd follow it to shine on her beloved one's face.
but message-bearing swans can't fly out of moonlight,
nor can letter-sending fish leap out of their place.
last night he dreamed that falling flowers would not stay.
alas! he can't go home, although half spring has gone.
the running water bearing spring will pass away;
the moon declining over the pool will sink anon.
the moon declining sinks into a heavy mist;
it's a long way between southern rivers and eastern seas.
how many can go home by moonlight who are missed?
the sinking moon sheds yearning o'er riverside trees.

This song you are listening is player by one of Pipa masters Liu Dehai,from below CD,you can hear more masterpieces from Master Liu,the album is named "Drunk Strings"

Five Big Misunderstandings about Sleep

“Why more sleep, more tired?””I don’t sleep tonight,I can make it up tomorrow”"I always sleep after drinking,drinking makes my body warm","I take a one hour noon nap every day,it makes me feel so good!"If you agree with above opinions,be careful!you may have been in a misunderstanding of sleep.Below is the five big misunderstandings about sleep,you check if you are having one of them:

Misunderstanding No.1:More Sleep Benefits Health

Some people will have a very long sleep on weekends trying to gain back sleep which was lost to work in workdays,however,they don’t get what they want,they get more tired than in usual days.Why?Actually,the sleep duration is not only one factor contributing to a healthy sleep,different people asks for different sleep time,so the quality of sleep is much more important than the sleep length.Most significant thing is to make your life well organized.

Misunderstanding No.2:Drinking Helps Sleep

In real life there are many people like to drink before going to bed, believing they would soon fall asleep.In fact,this approach is not desirable.During sleep,the harmful substances of the wine will remain in the body,poisoning the body,but also damage the retina, a reduced ability to cause the body to adapt.

Misunderstanding No.3:Sleep Disorder is not a disease

It is understood that 8% of people in their lives have different level of sleep disorders.Insomnia can be eliminated.For a few sleep disorders are concerned,there may be some yet to be revealed,or has emerged as a symptom of the disease

Misunderstanding No.4:I don’t need noon nap

Napping is a good way to harmonize the biological clock,but should  not be too long,15 minutes is appropriate.Studies have shown that napping can prevent premature aging,to lower the incidence of cardiovascular disease by 30%.However,nap is not good for every one,20% overweighted people,low blood pressure people and people whose circulatory system with severe disabilities,often due to siesta of local blood supply to the brain caused by lack of stroke.

Misunderstanding No.5:Depends on Sleeping Pills

Sleeping with sleeping pills is not a substitute for a real natural sleep. This is because more than 95% of the pills will shorten the depth of the sleep.Experts point out that so far have yet to find non-toxic side effects of exogenous sleeping pills,Doctor's advice should be taken before having sleep pills.

Beware the Mighty Finger of Doom

The bulging biceps of Arnold Schwarzenegger… the rippling chest of Sylvester Stallone… and the mighty finger of Fu Bingli? Finger strength is not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of awesome body development and fitness, but 39-year-old kung fu master Fu Bingli, from Lianyungang in eastern China, could make you think again.

“My index finger has as much strength in it as most people’s entire body”, says Fu Bingli, demonstrating modestly that strength training for the hands also does wonders for one’s personal confidence. That’s quite a claim – but his demonstrations prove it.
Doing either one-handed pushups or two-handed single-finger pushups is a challenge for most fit athletes. Fu, however, performed twelve consecutive pushups on one finger on October 19, 2009, winning himself an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records.
He can also perform a one-fingered handstand – turning himself upside down and supporting his entire weight on just his right index finger.

While women in bars don’t usually check out a man by looking at his finger muscles straight off, finger strength is immensely important in most forms of martial arts. Exceptional displays of finger and grip strength are as common in martial arts lore as are tales of feats like karate master Mas Oyama’s favourite party trick of killing or dehorning a bull with one blow.
Aside from being able to perform impressive single-finger displays – something that seldom helps in a dark alley encounter – Fu Bingli’s thirty-two years of finger training give him a real advantage over his opponents in any movement that involves grasping, grappling, twisting, or finger-jabbing.

And besides that, he never has trouble unscrewing the lids from stubborn jars.
